Walt Dropo Autographs
Walt Dropo was an American baseball player who played for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and Baltimore Orioles during his career. He was born on January 30, 1923, in Moosup, Connecticut. He attended the University of Connecticut, where he played basketball and baseball.
Dropo made his major league debut in 1949 with the Boston Red Sox, where he played for five seasons. In his rookie year, he hit .322 with 34 home runs and 144 RBIs, which earned him the American League Rookie of the Year Award. He was also named to the All-Star team in 1950. Dropo was known for his strong defensive skills at first base and his powerful swing. He was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 1952 and had his best season with them in 1952, hitting .281 with 29 home runs and 104 RBIs.
Dropo finished his career with a .270 batting average, 152 home runs, and 704 RBIs. He also had a career fielding percentage of .994 as a first baseman, which earned him the nickname "Moose." After his playing career ended, Dropo worked as a high school teacher and coach. He passed away on December 17, 2010, at the age of 87. Dropo was inducted into the University of Connecticut Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1992.
