Wayne Simpson Autographs
Wayne Simpson was born in Wilmington, Ohio, on December 2, 1948. He was a pitcher who played in the major leagues from 1970 to 1977. Simpson was known for having a tremendous fastball, but also had control issues, which ultimately shortened his career.
Simpson began his baseball career at Wilmington High School, where he quickly made a name for himself as a standout pitcher. He was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the second round of the 1967 draft and made his debut with the club in 1970, going 14-3 with a 3.02 ERA en route to being named National League Rookie of the Year. While he never replicated that level of success, he remained a solid pitcher for the Reds, going 36-22 over his first three seasons.
Unfortunately, Simpson's career was derailed by injuries and control issues. He was traded to the California Angels in 1973, but was limited to just a handful of appearances due to a shoulder injury. He was later traded to the Kansas City Royals, where he struggled with his control and was eventually released in 1977. Despite his abbreviated career, Simpson was remembered as one of the most talented young pitchers of his generation, and his rookie campaign remains one of the best in baseball history.
