Tolleson played in the major leagues for 7 seasons, from 1981-87. He primarily played middle infielder, with the majority of his appearances at second base. He was known for his speed and defensive ability, but also had a solid batting average throughout his career. In his best season, 1983, he batted .277 with 22 stolen bases for the Rangers. After playing for the Rangers, he played for the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox before retiring in 1987.

After retiring from baseball, Tolleson went on to coach in various capacities. He was a minor league coach for the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles from 1989-91. He then served as the third base coach for the Texas Rangers from 1992-95. From 1996-99, he was the manager of the Charlotte Knights, a Triple-A team in the White Sox organization.
