Helms made his major league debut with the Braves in 1998, where he played primarily as a third baseman. He spent five seasons with Atlanta before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2002. His most productive season came in 2003, where he batted .256 with 23 home runs and 67 RBIs. Helms continued to bounce around the league, playing for the Florida Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Houston Astros before retiring in 2012.

Throughout his career, Helms proved to be a valuable utility player. He played both corner infield positions, as well as outfield, over his 14-year career. He won a World Series with the Marlins in 2003 and was known for his power at the plate. Helms finished his career with a .256 batting average, 75 home runs, and 374 RBIs.
