Willie Horton

Willie Horton is a retired baseball player who was born on October 18, 1942, in Arno, Virginia. He began his professional baseball career in 1961 at the age of 18 when he signed with the Detroit Tigers. Horton spent the majority of his career with the Tigers, playing with them for 15 seasons. He also spent brief stints with the Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians before retiring in 1980. Horton was a three-time All-Star and won the Silver Slugger award in 1968. He was a vital part of the Tigers' successful 1968 World Series championship team, batting .304 with two home runs and five RBIs in the series. Horton's career batting average was .273, with 1,993 hits, 325 home runs, and 1,163 runs batted in. After his playing career, Horton remained involved in baseball as a coach and instructor, including stints with the Tigers and Seattle Mariners, and as a community ambassador. He was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Outside of baseball, Horton was dedicated to social justice issues and worked to improve the lives of children in Detroit. He started the Willie Horton Foundation, which helped provide education and athletic opportunities for underserved youth. In 1982, he became a national figure in politics when his name was used in a controversial ad during the reelection campaign of President Ronald Reagan, known as the "Willie Horton ad." Despite this, Horton remained committed to his community and baseball, and his legacy as a player and humanitarian continues to inspire to this day.
