Woodie Fryman was a former American baseball player who played as a pitcher in the Major League Baseball for eighteen seasons. Born on April 26, 1940, in Ewing, Kentucky, Fryman started his baseball career in 1966 when he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Throughout his career, Fryman played for several teams, including Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers, Montreal Expos, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago Cubs. During his 18 seasons in the Major League Baseball, Fryman recorded a 141-155 record, with 1,612 strikeouts, 74 complete games, and 17 shutouts. He also had a career ERA of 3.77, which was a remarkable feat for any pitcher.

In 1983, Fryman retired from his baseball career and was subsequently inducted into the Montreal Expos Hall of Fame in 1995. The Woodie Fryman Award, which is an annual award given to the top pitcher in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's state baseball tournament, was also named in his honor.
