After spending five seasons with the Phillies, English was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1933. He spent five seasons with the Cubs, becoming one of the most reliable infielders in the league. He had a .973 fielding percentage during his time with the Cubs, earning him the reputation as one of the best shortstops in the game.

In his 15-year career, Woody English played for four different teams, including the Cleveland Indians and Brooklyn Dodgers. He finished with a career batting average of .288, 1,596 hits, and 547 RBIs. Although he never won a World Series, he was a two-time All-Star and one of the most respected infielders of his era.
