Yasmani Grandal is a Cuban-American professional baseball catcher who was born on November 8, 1988, in Havana, Cuba. Grandal's family migrated to the United States when he was only ten years old, and he grew up in the Miami, Florida area. At a young age, Grandal showed an immense passion for baseball and played for his high school team in his sophomore and junior years, leading his team to the 2006 state title. He was later drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 2007 draft but ultimately decided to attend college at the University of Miami.
At the University of Miami, Grandal established himself as one of the top-catching prospects in the country. In his junior year, he batted .401 with 15 home runs and 60 RBIs and was named an All-American. He was drafted in the first round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2010 and made his MLB debut on June 2, 2012, with the Reds. Grandal quickly established himself as a consistent and reliable catcher and had several successful seasons with the Reds before being traded to the San Diego Padres in 2015. He continued to excel with the Padres, earning his first All-Star selection in 2015.
In 2018, Grandal signed a one-year deal with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he had a career-best year with 28 home runs and 77 RBIs, earning his second All-Star selection. He continued to show his prowess in the 2018 postseason, where he led the Brewers with 26 total bases and helped the team reach the National League Championship Series. Grandal then signed a four-year contract with the Chicago White Sox in November 2019, where he continued to be an essential part of the team's success, playing a vital role in the team reaching the playoffs in the 2020 season. With his impressive skills and longevity in the game, Yasmani Grandal has become one of the top catchers in professional baseball history.
