Yusei Kikuchi Autographs
Japanese pitcher Yusei Kikuchi was born on June 17, 1991, in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. After playing baseball from a young age, he went on to attend Hanamaki Higashi High School where he showcased his talent and passion for the sport. During his senior year, he led his team to the Koshien tournament where he caught the attention of scouts from Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
In 2011, Kikuchi was drafted by the Seibu Lions, a member of the Pacific League in NPB. He quickly became a star player for the team, earning the Pacific League Rookie of the Year award in 2012. Over the next few years, Kikuchi continued to excel and cement his position as one of Seibu's top pitchers. In 2017, he achieved a career-high 16 wins and 217 strikeouts, earning him the Pacific League MVP Award.
In 2018, Kikuchi declared his intention to play in Major League Baseball (MLB) and was up for international bidding. Eventually, he signed with the Seattle Mariners for a reported four-year deal worth $56 million. He made his MLB debut in March 2019, becoming the first Japanese pitcher to start for the Mariners since Hisashi Iwakuma in 2017. While he faced some struggles in his first season, Kikuchi showed flashes of his potential as a dominant pitcher and continues to work towards unlocking his full potential in the MLB.
