Al McGuire Autographs
Al McGuire was a legendary basketball coach and commentator from the United States. Born on September 7, 1928, in New York City, McGuire grew up in a large, Irish Catholic family before attending St. John's University in Queens, New York. After graduation, McGuire briefly played basketball professionally for the New York Knicks before embarking on a successful collegiate coaching career.
McGuire's coaching career began in 1964, when he was hired to lead the Marquette University men's basketball team, where he achieved great success over the next 13 seasons. During his tenure, McGuire took Marquette to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament three times and won the championship in 1977. He also won seven conference titles and 295 games overall, making him one of the most successful coaches in school history.
After retiring from coaching in 1977, McGuire transitioned into a broadcasting career, where he became one of the most beloved personalities in the sport. Known for his colorful commentary and quick wit, McGuire provided insight and analysis for CBS Sports for over a decade, earning an Emmy Award for his work in 1977. He was a fixture on the network's coverage of the NCAA Tournament, and his presence helped grow the event into the cultural phenomenon it is today. McGuire passed away on January 26, 2001, but his impact on basketball will be felt for generations to come.
