Alvin Robertson is a retired professional basketball player who enjoyed a successful career in the NBA. Born on July 22, 1962, in Barberton, Ohio, Robertson began playing basketball from a young age. He attended William Howard Taft High School in San Antonio, Texas, where he excelled as a basketball player, leading his team to the state championships twice. He then moved on to play college basketball for the Texas Longhorns, where he established himself as an all-around player, earning the Southwest Conference Player of the Year award in 1983.
Robertson was selected seventh overall in the 1984 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs, where he played for six seasons before moving on to play for the Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors, and Denver Nuggets. During his 10-year NBA career, Robertson was known for his versatility as a shooting guard, small forward, and point guard. He was also a tenacious defender, leading the league in steals three times and winning the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award in 1986. In addition to his defensive prowess, he was an excellent scorer and play-maker, averaging 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game over his career.
Despite his impressive career, Robertson faced personal struggles off the court, which eventually led to the premature end of his playing career. He struggled with alcoholism and was arrested multiple times for driving under the influence. However, he has since turned his life around and has become an advocate for mental health and addiction awareness. Robertson's legacy remains as one of the NBA's greatest two-way players and a significant contributor to his teams' success during his career.
