Austin Carr was born on March 10, 1948, in Washington, D.C., and received his education at Mackin Catholic High School. Carr then chose to play college basketball at the University of Notre Dame, where he was a prolific scorer for the Fighting Irish. Carr was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the first overall pick in the 1971 NBA Draft. He soon established himself as a major scoring threat in the league, earning the nickname "Mr. Cavalier."
