Avery Johnson is a retired American professional basketball player and coach. He was born on March 25, 1965, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Johnson played for several NBA teams during his 16-year career, including the San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors, and Dallas Mavericks. He was known for his quickness and playmaking ability on the court. Johnson was a solid defender and good passer who could both start games or come off the bench.
Johnson's coaching career began in 2004 as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks. He became the team's head coach in 2005 and led them to the NBA Finals in his first season as head coach. In 2008, he was named NBA Coach of the Year. Johnson also coached the Brooklyn Nets and the Alabama Crimson Tide before retiring from coaching in 2019. During his coaching career, he was known for his intense focus and meticulous preparation. He was highly regarded as a defensive coach and was respected for his knowledge of the game.
Over the course of his career, Johnson earned several accolades and awards, including an NBA championship with the Spurs in 1999. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1994 and was a member of the Western Conference All-Star team in 1992.
