Avery Johnson is a retired American professional basketball player and coach. He was born on March 25, 1965, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Johnson played for several NBA teams during his 16-year career, including the San Antonio Spurs, Golden State Warriors, and Dallas Mavericks. Johnson's coaching career began in 2004 as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks. He became the team's head coach in 2005 and led them to the NBA Finals in his first season as head coach. In 2008, he was named NBA Coach of the Year. Johnson also coached the Brooklyn Nets and the Alabama Crimson Tide before retiring from coaching in 2019.
