Bill Fitch Autographs
Bill Fitch was an American professional basketball coach who had a remarkable career in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the American Basketball Association (ABA). Born on May 19, 1932, in Davenport, Iowa, he attended Coe College where he played college basketball for four seasons before starting his coaching career at his alma mater. Fitch’s first professional coaching job was with the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers in 1970. He went on to coach other teams such as the Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, New Jersey Nets, and the Los Angeles Clippers.
Fitch’s coaching style was renowned for its emphasis on defensive strategies and teamwork, which led to his teams being ranked as some of the best defensive teams in the league. His Boston Celtics team won two NBA championships in the 1980s and he was also named NBA Coach of the Year twice. Fitch’s coaching strategy was so effective that it served as the basis for the modern “hack-a-Shaq” technique where a team would purposely foul a poor free-throw shooter repeatedly to limit their scoring potential.
Although now retired from coaching, Bill Fitch is still regarded as one of the most respected and successful coaches in basketball history. In 2019, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the sport. His dedication to defensive tactics and teamwork remains an inspiration to modern coaches and players alike. Fitch's achievements in the NBA prove that he has left an irreplaceable mark in the sport and continues to be revered as one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time.
