Bo Kimble is a former American professional basketball player, born on April 9, 1966, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He played his high school basketball at Germantown Academy before committing to play college basketball at the University of Southern California (USC). With his impressive shooting ability and athleticism, Kimble became a star at USC, earning All-Pac-10 honors and leading the Trojans to two NCAA tournaments.
Kimble's professional career began in 1990 when he was drafted eighth overall by the Los Angeles Clippers. He played for the Clippers and the New York Knicks before finishing his career playing basketball overseas. Kimble is most renowned for his famous left-handed free throw tribute to his close friend and former college teammate, Hank Gathers, who passed away during a game due to a heart condition. In the NCAA tournament, Kimble led the tournament in scoring with 35 points per game, and despite being a left-handed shooter, he shoots free throws with his right hand throughout his career.
Throughout Kimble's career, he was recognized as a skilled shooting guard who provided his team with solid minutes and an ability to score from anywhere on the court. He also helped forward the narrative of physical and mental health awareness in basketball, emphasizing the need for strong emotional support for athletes. Today, Kimble serves as a co-founder of the In A Heartbeat Foundation, which works to raise awareness of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the condition that caused Gathers' death.
