Born on July 23, 1993, in Lansing, Michigan, he began his basketball career at Sexton High School, where he led the team to the Michigan state championship in his senior year. He was named the Lansing State Journal Player of the Year after averaging 21 points and 5 rebounds per game during that season.
After high school, Forbes attended Michigan State University and played basketball for the Spartans from 2012-2016. During his final season, he was named Second-Team All-Big Ten after leading the conference in three-point shooting percentage at 48.1%. After graduation, he went undrafted in the 2016 NBA draft but was later signed by the San Antonio Spurs where he played for three seasons. Forbes was primarily used as a three-point specialist by Spurs, where he shot 40.3% from beyond the arc over those three seasons. In 2020, he joined the Milwaukee Bucks as a free agent and has since played a key role in the team's success, helping them win the NBA championship in the 2020-21 season.
