Campy Russell was born on January 12, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was an American former professional basketball player who spent thirteen years playing for different teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Russell began his basketball career at the University of Michigan and was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the 8th overall pick in the 1974 NBA draft. He quickly established himself as one of the most formidable forwards in the league, earning a reputation as a fierce competitor and a tenacious scorer.
During his tenure with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1974 to 1979, Campy Russell made a significant impact on the team and became a fan favorite. In his second year with the team, he was named an All-Star and finished his career with the Cavaliers as the second-leading scorer in team history. In 1979, Russell was traded to the New York Knicks, where he continued to excel as a forward, averaging 18.1 points per game. After spending two seasons with the Knicks, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors, where he played the remaining three years of his career. In 1985, he retired from professional basketball with a career average of 15.1 points per game.
Campy Russell was known for his versatility, scoring ability, and tenacious defense. He was a two-time NBA All-Star and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1975. Russell also had a successful international career, representing the United States in the 1978 FIBA World Championship and helping the team to win the gold medal. After his playing career, he went on to work as a television analyst and served as the Director of Player Development for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Today, Campy Russell is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the Cavaliers franchise, and his contributions to the game of basketball will always be remembered.
