Danny Manning is a retired professional basketball player and current coach. Born in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1966, he had a successful career as a player and is known for his versatility on the court. Manning attended the University of Kansas, where he helped lead the Jayhawks to an NCAA championship in 1988. He was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player in that year's tournament, and he remains one of the most celebrated athletes in the school's history.
After college, Manning was the first overall pick in the 1988 NBA draft and began his professional career with the Los Angeles Clippers. He spent 15 seasons in the NBA, playing for a variety of teams, including the Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns, and Utah Jazz. He was a two-time NBA All-Star, and in 1997, he was named the league's Sixth Man of the Year. Manning retired from playing in 2003, but he remained involved in basketball as a coach. He has coached at the college level, including at his alma mater of Kansas, as well as in the NBA.
Today, Manning is the head coach of the Wake Forest men's basketball team. He has been in that role since 2014 and has worked to rebuild the program. Though he has had success as a coach, his playing career remains his most notable achievement. Danny Manning's versatility, work ethic, and talent made him a formidable presence on the basketball court, and his legacy continues to inspire basketball players at all levels today.
