Danny Schayes is a former American professional basketball player. Born on May 10, 1959, in Syracuse, New York, he developed a passion for basketball from a young age. He attended Jamesville-DeWitt High School in DeWitt, New York, where he was a standout basketball player. After graduating in 1977, he was awarded a full basketball scholarship to attend Syracuse University, where he played for the Syracuse Orange from 1977-1981. During his college career, he averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds per game, and was named to the All-Big East Conference First Team in 1981.
After graduating from Syracuse University, Schayes was selected in the first round of the 1981 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. He played for the Jazz for two seasons before being traded to the Denver Nuggets in 1983. He spent six seasons with the Nuggets, where he became known as one of the best backup centers in the league, averaging 10 points and 6 rebounds per game. In 1989, he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he played for two seasons before being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1991. He spent one season with the Lakers before being traded to the Phoenix Suns in 1992, where he finished his NBA career in 1999. Over his 18-year NBA career, Schayes played in 1,138 games, averaging 7.7 points, 5 rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per game.
In addition to his NBA career, Schayes also played for the US national team in the 1985 FIBA World Championship, where he helped the team win the gold medal. After retiring from basketball, Schayes became a basketball analyst and commentator, and worked for the NBA as a Director of Alumni Relations. He has also been involved in various charitable organizations, including the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the American Diabetes Association. Schayes is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished basketball players of his generation, and his contributions to the sport continue to be celebrated today.
