Darko Milicic was born on June 20, 1985, in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia (now Serbia). He spent his childhood playing basketball with the KK Vojvodina team in his hometown. Milicic was a standout player in his youth, joining the Serbian national team at age 16. In 2003, at the age of 18, Milicic declared for the NBA Draft, becoming the second overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. He was the youngest player to be selected in the draft at that time. Milicic's time in Detroit was frustrating as he struggled to find consistent minutes, often serving as a backup to All-Star center Ben Wallace. After three seasons with the Pistons, he was traded to the Orlando Magic, where he continued to struggle.
