Darryl DawkinsDarryl Dawkins was a professional basketball player born on January 11, 1957, in Orlando, Florida. He was known for his powerful dunking abilities, unique nicknames, and infectious personality both on and off the court. Dawkins played for the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets in the NBA.
Dawkins' professional career began when he entered the NBA draft in 1975 and was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers as the fifth overall pick. He became a fan favorite during his time with the 76ers, where he played from 1975 to 1982. His unique personality and love for the game made him a popular player, but it was his thunderous dunks that really caught people's attention. Dawkins named his dunks unique names such as the "Go-Rilla" and "Chocolate Thunder," which became household names.
Dawkins' career highlights include two NBA Finals appearances and being named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1983. He played 14 seasons in the NBA, with his last season being in 1989 as a member of the Detroit Pistons. After retirement, Dawkins became a coach and also worked as a public speaker. He passed away on August 27, 2015, at the age of 58.
