Dean Smith was an American college basketball coach who dedicated his life to the sport. He was born on February 28, 1931, in Emporia, Kansas, and raised in Topeka. Smith's interest in basketball began when he was a child, and he played on his high school team at Topeka High School. After graduating, Smith began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Kansas. His big break came in 1961 when he was hired as head coach of the men's basketball team at the University of North Carolina. Smith quickly established himself as one of the greatest coaches of all time, leading the Tar Heels to two national championships in 1982 and 1993, as well as 13 ACC championships.
