Denny Crum was born on March 2, 1937, in San Fernando, California, and grew up in the nearby town of Gardena. As a young man, he excelled in both baseball and basketball, but ultimately chose to pursue a career in baseball. He attended the University of San Francisco, where he played as a catcher for the baseball team. After his playing career ended, Crum turned to coaching, first at the high school level and then in college. He was hired as an assistant coach at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1968 and helped lead the team to four consecutive NCAA championships from 1968 to 1973.
