Derek Harper is a former American professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for 16 seasons between 1983 and 1999. The 6-foot-4 point guard was born on October 13, 1961, in Elberton, Georgia, and grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida. He played college basketball at the University of Illinois before being drafted by the Dallas Mavericks in the first round of the 1983 NBA Draft.
Harper's NBA career began in 1983 with the Dallas Mavericks, where he played for 10 years and became the franchise's all-time leader in points, assists, and steals. During his tenure with the Mavericks, he was a three-time All-Star and a member of the NBA's All-Defensive team twice. In 1994, Harper was traded to the New York Knicks, where he played for five seasons and helped the team reach the NBA Finals in 1994 and 1999. In total, Harper played in 1,199 NBA games, scoring 16,006 points, dishing out 6,577 assists, and grabbing 1,716 rebounds.
Throughout his NBA career, Derek Harper was known as an excellent defender and a reliable point guard. He was a fierce competitor on both ends of the court and was often tasked with guarding some of the league's best players, including Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson. Harper's defensive prowess and leadership on the court made him a valuable asset to every team he played for. In 2004, he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2018, the Dallas Mavericks retired his #12 jersey in honor of his contributions to the franchise.
