Dick McGuire Autographs
Dick McGuire was a professional basketball player, coach and executive who had a decorated career in the sport. Born in New York City in 1926, McGuire attended St. John’s University where he played college basketball. After serving in World War II, he joined the New York Knicks in the NBA in 1949. He played as a guard for 11 seasons and was known for his precision passing and ball-handling skills. In fact, he earned the nickname “Tricky Dicky” for his ability to trick opposing players with his quick moves on the court. During his playing career, McGuire was a six-time NBA All-Star and helped lead the Knicks to three NBA Finals.
After retiring as a player in 1960, McGuire became a coach for the Detroit Pistons, leading them to three playoff appearances in his four seasons. He then moved on to serve as a scout and executive for several NBA teams including the Philadelphia 76ers, Portland Trail Blazers, and New York Knicks. He is credited with discovering and drafting several future NBA Hall of Famers such as Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere and Willis Reed.
McGuire was recognized for his contributions to basketball with several honors throughout his career. In 1993, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player. In 2010, he was inducted again, this time as a contributor to the sport. The New York Knicks, which he spent most of his career with as a player and executive, retired his jersey number, 15, in his honor. McGuire passed away in 2010 at the age of 84, but his legacy lives on in the NBA and in the hearts of basketball fans worldwide.
