Earl Lloyd Autographs
Earl Lloyd was an American professional basketball player, born on April 3, 1928, in Alexandria, Virginia. He was the first African American to play in the National Basketball Association (NBA) on October 31, 1950. Lloyd played basketball at West Virginia State College before being drafted by the Washington Capitals in the 1950 NBA draft.
Lloyd played nine seasons in the NBA for the Washington Capitals, Syracuse Nationals, and Detroit Pistons. He scored 4,682 points in his NBA career, having an average of 8.4 points per game. In his rookie season, Lloyd was primarily used as a defensive specialist. Still, he developed into a reliable scorer and was an essential starter for the Nationals’ 1955 NBA championship team. Lloyd was a three-time NBA All-Star, in 1955, 1956, and 1959, and was selected for honor in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.
Lloyd’s legacy extends beyond his basketball career as he worked as a coach and made significant contributions to civil rights. After his playing career, Lloyd coached the Pistons in 1971 and was an assistant coach for the New Jersey Nets. Lloyd was active in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and served as a motivational speaker for numerous events. To honor Lloyd’s legacy, the Detroit Pistons established the Earl Lloyd Historical Night, an annual event that celebrates the contributions of African Americans to basketball history.
