Jones played for the Temple Owls from 1991 to 1994, contributing to the team's successful record during his time there. In his junior year, he was named the Atlantic-10 Conference Player of the Year after averaging 19.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 3.8 steals per game. Jones also set a single-season record at Temple with 102 steals. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1994, starting his professional basketball career.

Jones played in the NBA for 14 seasons, playing for teams such as the Lakers, Charlotte Hornets, and Miami Heat. He was known for his defensive skills and was included in the NBA All-Defensive teams three times. In addition, he was also a proficient scorer, with a career scoring average of 14.8 points per game. Jones retired from professional basketball in 2008, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most talented two-way players in the league.
