Elmore Smith is a former professional basketball player who was born on May 9, 1949, in Macon, Georgia, United States. Smith attended Ballard Hudson High School in Macon, where he developed his basketball skills. He later attended Kentucky State University, where he continued to develop his basketball career, becoming a dominant force on the court. In 1971, he was drafted as the first overall pick by the Buffalo Braves in the first round of the NBA draft, beginning his professional basketball career.
During his seven-year NBA career, Smith played for three different teams, including the Buffalo Braves, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Milwaukee Bucks. He is best known for his skills as a defensive player, holding the record for most blocks in a single game with 17, a record he set while playing for the Lakers in 1973. He also set the NBA record for most blocked shots in a season, with 393 in the season of 1973-74.
Smith's NBA career ended in 1978 when he retired from the league due to injuries. However, his contributions to the game can not be ignored. Smith was an integral part of the Buffalo Braves team that made it to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history in 1973, and he was also a key player for the Milwaukee Bucks team that won the NBA championship in 1975.
