After retiring from playing, Grunfeld became a successful front office executive in the NBA. He served as the general manager for the Knicks, helping them reach the NBA Finals in the 1993-1994 season. In 1996, he became the general manager for the Milwaukee Bucks, where he helped build a team that went to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2001. In 2003, he became the president of basketball operations for the Washington Wizards, where he helped build a playoff team led by Gilbert Arenas.

Throughout his career, Grunfeld has been known for his ability to recognize and develop talent. He has been credited with drafting players such as Patrick Ewing, Mark Jackson, and Bradley Beal.
