George McGinnis was born on August 12, 1950, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was raised in a family of six children and attended Washington High School where he began to make a name for himself in basketball. Drafted by the Indiana Pacers in 1971, McGinnis distinguished himself as a powerful scorer and rebounder. In his rookie year, he won the American Basketball Association (ABA) Rookie of the Year award, averaging 21.7 points and 11.1 rebounds.
