George Mikan Autographs
George Mikan, also known as “Mr. Basketball”, was one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA. Born in Joliet, Illinois in 1924, Mikan began playing basketball at a young age despite his towering height of 6’10”. He went on to attend DePaul University where he played for the school’s basketball team and led them to a National Invitation Tournament championship in 1945.
Mikan’s professional career started in 1946 when he signed with the Chicago American Gears, a team in the short-lived National Basketball League. He then joined the Minneapolis Lakers in the newly-formed Basketball Association of America (BAA), which later merged with the National Basketball League to form the NBA. Mikan’s size and skills as a center made him virtually unstoppable in the league, leading the Lakers to five championships in six years including a remarkable streak of three consecutive championships from 1952-1954. Mikan retired in 1956 after nine seasons with the Lakers, but his legacy as one of the most dominant players in the history of the NBA lives on.
Off the court, Mikan also made tremendous contributions to the sport of basketball. He was instrumental in creating the goaltending rule which prohibits a defender from touching the ball on its downward trajectory towards the basket. He also helped establish the Players’ Association and fought for better salaries and working conditions for players. In addition, Mikan was inducted into the inaugural class of the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1960 and the NBA named the NBA Finals MVP award after him in 2002. George Mikan’s unparalleled success and impact on the sport of basketball is a testament to his talent and dedication to the game.
