Hank began his professional career with the Boston Celtics after being drafted by the team in 1969. He became known for his rebounding ability as a backup center for future Hall of Famer Dave Cowens. Finkel played intermittently for the Celtics in his first few seasons, but his peak year came in 1972-73, where he played in all 82 games for the Celtics, averaging 9.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. His great defense, high basketball IQ, and excellent scoring ability allowed him to become a fundamental player in Boston's Boston's roster during that year.

In 1975, Hank was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, where he played for two seasons before retiring in 1977. After his retirement, he briefly worked as a color analyst on Celtics broadcasts before serving as a college scout for several NBA teams. Hank Finkel will go down in NBA history for his long-time academic and athletic achievements at Dayton and his contribution of a powerful inside game that aided Boston in their playoff runs in the early 1970s.
