Jamaal Wilkes was born on May 2, 1953, in Berkeley, California. He played basketball at Santa Barbara High School and soon emerged as one of the leading players in the state. Wilkes was selected eleventh overall in the 1974 NBA draft by the Golden State Warriors. He became an integral part of their team and helped them win an NBA championship in 1975. In 1980, Wilkes was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played alongside Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He played a key role in the team's championship victories in 1980, 1982, and 1985.
