At Duke, Jay Williams played for Coach Mike Krzyzewski and left a lasting legacy. He became the first freshman to start every game for Duke since Gene Banks had in 1978-79, and helped lead his team to the 2001 NCAA Championship. The following year, he was named the National Player of the Year, the ACC Player of the Year, and a consensus first-team All-American. He averaged 21.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game as a sophomore, setting the tone for a remarkable career ahead.

Jay Williams was selected second overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 2002 NBA draft, behind only Yao Ming. In his rookie season, he averaged 9.5 points, 4.7 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game, starting 54 of 75 games. However, on June 19, 2003, he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that effectively ended his professional career. After the accident, Williams never played in the NBA again, but he remains a beloved figure in the history of college basketball, and his name is often mentioned as one of the greatest players ever to play for Duke University.
