Joel Embiid was born on March 16, 1994, in Yaoundé, Cameroon. As a teenager, Embiid played volleyball and soccer before being introduced to basketball at the age of 15. He quickly developed a passion for the game and began training with Luc Mbah a Moute, a fellow Cameroonian who had played in the NBA. Embiid later attended high school in Florida and played one season at the University of Kansas, where he was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
In 2014, Embiid was drafted third overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, but he missed his first two NBA seasons due to injuries. Despite setbacks, Embiid gradually established himself as one of the best young players in the league. In 2018, he was named to his first All-Star team and helped lead the 76ers to their first playoff appearance in six years. The following year, he signed a five-year contract extension worth over $150 million, reflecting his rising status as one of the NBA's premier talents.
