Johnny Most was a legendary sportscaster whose voice was a staple of Boston Celtics basketball games for over three decades. Born on June 15, 1923, in New York City, Most started his broadcasting career in 1948, calling minor league baseball games. In 1953, he moved to Boston to cover Celtics basketball and quickly became an icon in the city. He was known for his distinctive raspy voice, colorful descriptions, and passionate love for the Celtics.
Most’s basketball career was intimately tied to the Celtics, who he chronicled from the days of Bob Cousy and Bill Russell to the era of Larry Bird and Kevin McHale. Most’s radio calls were legendary, particularly during the Celtics’ championship seasons in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1980s. His most famous call came during Game 7 of the 1965 NBA Finals, when John Havlicek stole the ball from the Philadelphia 76ers in the closing seconds to secure the championship for the Celtics. Most’s frenzied call – “Havlicek stole the ball! It’s all over! It’s all over! Johnny Havlicek is being mobbed by his teammates!” – became an instant classic, and remains one of the most memorable moments in basketball history.
Most’s contributions to Boston sports, and basketball in particular, earned him numerous honors throughout his career. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2001, and into the Basketball Hall of Fame’s media wing in 1993. Though he passed away in 1993, Most’s voice lives on in countless classic recordings and highlights, and his passion for the game of basketball continue to inspire Celtics fans to this day.
