Katie Smith is a retired American professional basketball player who was born on June 4, 1974, in Logan, Ohio. Smith is considered one of the greatest women's basketball players in history, having won multiple championships and individual awards during her illustrious career. Smith started playing basketball in high school, where she learned the basics of the sport and honed her skills to become one of the best players in her region.
After high school, Katie Smith went to The Ohio State University, where she played college basketball for the Buckeyes. During her college career, Smith was a standout player, earning numerous awards and accolades, including being named the Big Ten Player of the Year in 1996 and 1997. After graduation, Smith was drafted by the Minnesota Lynx in the first round of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) draft. In the WNBA, Smith played for several teams, including the Lynx, Detroit Shock, and Seattle Storm.
During her professional career, Smith won three WNBA championships, two Olympic gold medals, and was named one of the top 20 players in WNBA history. Smith is also the only player in history to have scored over 6,000 points, grabbed over 2,000 rebounds, and made over 1,000 assists in her WNBA career. After retiring from playing, Smith became a coach, first as an assistant for the New York Liberty and then as the head coach for the New York Liberty and the Columbus State Cougars. Smith's legacy in women's basketball is cemented in her accomplishments on and off the court, and she continues to inspire young players around the world to chase their dreams.
