Kenny Smith was born on March 8, 1965, in Queens, New York, and was a standout basketball player during his high school years at Archbishop Centennial High School. He went on to play college basketball at the University of North Carolina, where he won two NCAA championships in 1982 and 1983. In his senior year, he was a consensus first-team All-American. After college, Smith was selected as the sixth overall pick by the Sacramento Kings in the 1987 NBA Draft. He played for the Kings for two seasons before moving to the Atlanta Hawks, where he had his best years.
