Mac McClung, born on January 6, 1999, in Gate City, Virginia, rose to prominence as a high school basketball sensation known for his explosive dunks and high-scoring performances. He set the Virginia High School League single-season scoring record, surpassing Allen Iverson's mark, and finished his high school career with 2,801 points. McClung's viral dunking videos and impressive stats earned him national attention, leading to his recruitment by Georgetown University.
In college, McClung played for Georgetown for two seasons before transferring to Texas Tech for his junior year. At Georgetown, he averaged 14.2 points per game across two seasons and was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team. At Texas Tech, McClung continued to excel, averaging 15.5 points per game and earning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors. After his junior year, he declared for the 2021 NBA draft.
Despite going undrafted, McClung has carved out a professional career through perseverance and showcasing his skills in the NBA G League. He won the 2021–22 G League Rookie of the Year award with the South Bay Lakers and has since had stints with several NBA teams. McClung's most notable achievements include winning back-to-back NBA Slam Dunk Contests in 2023 and 2024, becoming the first G League player to participate in and win the event. As of 2025, he is under a two-way contract with the Orlando Magic, continuing to pursue his NBA dreams while also being named the 2024 NBA G League Most Valuable Player.
