Gortat quickly established himself as a dependable center in the league, known for his strength, agility and rebounding skills. He played for the Suns from 2007 to 2010, before being traded to the Orlando Magic where he spent four seasons. During his time in Orlando, Gortat was instrumental in the Magic's run to the 2009 NBA Finals, where they were ultimately defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Gortat has also represented his home country of Poland on the international stage, having competed in the FIBA World Championship and the EuroBasket. He has been recognized as one of the best basketball players to come out of Poland and has earned the nickname "The Polish Hammer" for his powerful dunks and blocks. In 2013, he signed a five-year contract with the Washington Wizards, where he continued to make significant contributions to the team until his retirement in 2019.
