Mark Few Autographs
Mark Few is known today as one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time, but his early life was immersed in baseball. Born on December 27, 1962 in Creswell, Oregon, Few grew up playing baseball alongside his brother and father. He went on to attend the University of Oregon, playing baseball as a pitcher for the Ducks. In his senior year, he was named First-Team All-Pac-10 and had a record of 6-3 with a 2.64 ERA. Few had dreams of pursuing a career in baseball, but after graduating, he decided to try his hand at coaching instead.
After graduating from college with a degree in physical education, Few began coaching in his hometown of Creswell, where he led the high school baseball team to a state championship in 1985. He then became an assistant coach for the basketball team at the University of Oregon, but continued his involvement with baseball by serving as an assistant coach for the school's baseball team. In 1989, Few was named head coach of the baseball team at Gonzaga University, where he stayed for ten seasons. Though he was successful as a coach, Few struggled to recruit top-tier players and ultimately decided to shift his focus to basketball.
Despite never having played basketball at a high level, Few quickly made a name for himself as a basketball coach. In 1999, he became an assistant coach for the Gonzaga men's basketball team, and just two years later, he was named the head coach. Under Few's leadership, the Bulldogs have become a powerhouse in college basketball, making it to the NCAA tournament every year since 1999 and reaching the Final Four in 2017. Few has won the WCC Coach of the Year award nine times and was named the National Coach of the Year in 2017. While baseball may have been his first love, Few has undoubtedly found his true calling on the basketball court.
