Mark Madsen is a retired American professional basketball player, who played in both the NBA and Europe. He was born on January 28, 1976, in Walnut Creek, California, and attended Stanford University, where he was an All-American forward, leading the Cardinal to the NCAA Final Four twice. In 2000, Madsen was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the NBA draft, where he played for seven seasons and won two NBA championships with the team.
Madsen was known for his tenacity, hustle, and hard work on the court. He primarily played as a power forward, often playing a role as a backup to star players such as Shaquille O'Neal and Karl Malone. He was also famous for his celebratory dance, known as the "Mad Dog" dance, which he performed during Lakers' championship parades. In addition to his time with the Lakers, Madsen played with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where he served as a player-coach, before ending his playing career in Europe.
Off the court, Madsen has been involved in coaching and player development. He worked as an assistant coach for the Utah Valley Wolverines before becoming the head coach at his alma mater, Stanford, in 2019. Throughout his basketball career, Madsen was admired for his work ethic and commitment to the game. His contribution to the Lakers' championships will always be remembered, as he played an important role in motivating and energizing his team when it mattered the most.
