Mehmet Okur is a retired Turkish professional basketball player who is famously known for his career in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Born on May 26, 1979, in Yalova, Turkey, Okur had a love for basketball from a young age. He started his basketball career with youth teams in Turkey and made his professional debut in the Turkish Basketball Super League in 1996 at the age of 17. In 2002, Okur was selected as the 37th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the NBA draft.
During his time with the Pistons, Okur played a crucial role in helping the team win the NBA Championship in 2004. The 6-foot-11 center gained recognition for his versatility as he could play both center and power forward positions. After his time with the Pistons, Okur played for the Utah Jazz from 2004-2011. During his tenure, Okur gained a reputation as an excellent three-point shooter, converting 38.1% of his attempts from beyond the arc. He was named an NBA All-Star in 2007 and helped lead the Jazz to the Western Conference Finals in 2007 and 2008.
Overall, Okur had a successful basketball career, both in Turkey and the NBA. He retired from basketball in 2012 after playing a season with the New Jersey Nets.
