Melvin Ely is a former American professional basketball player who played as a center. He was born on May 2, 1978, in Harvey, Illinois. Ely developed interest in basketball at a young age and played for his high school team. He later played college basketball for the Fresno State Bulldogs, where he had a successful career, leading his team to a NCAA tournament berth and winning the 2000 WAC Men's Basketball Tournament MVP.
Ely was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers as the 12th overall pick in the 2002 NBA draft, and he became a starter for the team during his rookie season. He played for several NBA teams, which include the Charlotte Bobcats, San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans Hornets, and Denver Nuggets. Ely's best season in the NBA came in 2006-2007 when he played for the San Antonio Spurs and averaged 9.9 points per game. He retired from professional basketball in 2015, concluding his career with averages of 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game.
