Meyers Leonard is a professional basketball player who currently plays for the Miami Heat in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He was born on February 27, 1992, in Woodbridge, Virginia. Leonard’s basketball career started when he was in high school when he averaged 22.6 points and 14.8 rebounds in his senior year while playing for the Robinson Secondary School. After this season, he was named the Virginia AAA Concorde District Player of the Year.
Leonard started his college career at the University of Illinois. He decided to leave college after two years to enter into the NBA draft. In the 2012 NBA draft, the Portland Trail Blazers selected Leonard with the 11th overall pick. Leonard played for the Trail Blazers for seven seasons before being traded to the Miami Heat in 2019. In the 2013-2014 season, he shot 42.5% from three-point range, which was the second-best percentage in the league at that time. Leonard is known for his versatility, as he can play as a power forward or center. During his time in collegiate and professional basketball, he earned several awards and earned All-American recognition during his sophomore season at the University of Illinois.
Leonard has also been vocal about supporting important social issues, such as the Black Lives Matter movement, LGBTQ+ rights, and mental health. He has been working to create change by partnering with different organizations and giving back to his community. Leonard's love for the game of basketball, his hardworking nature on and off the court, and his dedication to important social issues have made him not only a prominent athlete but also a positive influence for many.
