In 1980, Davis was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of the Major League Baseball draft. He made his MLB debut with the Athletics in 1983, and quickly became known for his speed and strong defensive skills in the outfield. He played for the Athletics until 1987, during which time he helped the team win the World Series in 1989.
