In 1980, Davis was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the third round of the Major League Baseball draft. He made his MLB debut with the Athletics in 1983, and quickly became known for his speed and strong defensive skills in the outfield. He played for the Athletics until 1987, during which time he helped the team win the World Series in 1989. In 1988, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played until his retirement in 1994.

Throughout his career, Davis was a fan favorite for his hustle and determination on the field. He was also known for his ability to steal bases and his clutch hitting in key moments. In 1984, he stole a career-high 50 bases and was named to the American League All-Star team. Davis finished his career with a .263 batting average, 91 home runs, and 320 stolen bases. Today, he is remembered as one of the best outfielders of his era and a key contributor to the Athletics' success in the 1980s.
