Nat Holman Autographs

Nat Holman, born in 1896 in New York City, was an American basketball player, coach, and innovator who made significant contributions to the development of modern basketball. Holman played basketball at the City College of New York (CCNY) from 1916 to 1917, where he helped lead the team to the Metropolitan championship. After serving in World War I, Holman returned to CCNY, where he led the school’s basketball team to an undefeated season in 1919-20, earning him the nickname “Mr. Basketball.”
Holman’s playing career continued beyond college as he went on to play for several amateur basketball teams, including the New York Celtics and the Original Celtics. Holman led the Original Celtics to an incredible 1922-23 season in which the team won 117 of the 120 games they played, including a victory over the celebrated Harlem Globetrotters. Holman’s skill as a player was matched only by his innovative tactics as a coach, and he was known for developing new strategies such as the fast break and the zone defense.
In addition to his playing and coaching success, Holman was also instrumental in the founding of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 1938, which is now considered one of college basketball’s most prestigious tournaments. Holman coached CCNY to victory in the first two NIT tournaments, which served to establish the college’s reputation as a basketball powerhouse. Throughout his career, Nat Holman left an enduring legacy, both as a player and a coach, and his innovations and contributions to the sport of basketball continue to be celebrated to this day.
