He began his basketball journey at Winter Haven High School where he showed his outstanding skills as a shooting guard. In 1977, Birdsong was drafted eighth overall by the Kansas City Kings where he spent five seasons before he was traded to the New Jersey Nets. During his career, Birdsong proved to be one of the best shooters and scorers in the league. He was a three-time NBA All-Star and was selected to the All-NBA Second Team in 1980. In 1984, he was traded again to the San Antonio Spurs where he played for two seasons before finishing his career with the Boston Celtics in 1988.

Birdsong was known for his smooth style of play and his ability to score off the dribble and from the perimeter. He retired with a total of 12,544 points, 2,997 assists, and 1,569 rebounds in 760 games. After his retirement, he returned to the University of Houston to complete his degree in communications.
