Silas went on to play for Creighton University, where he became a three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection. After college, he was drafted by the Houston Rockets in 1964 and played for them for a year. He later gained prominence as a rebounding specialist during his time with the Boston Celtics from 1972 to 1976. During his career, he won two NBA championships with the Celtics in 1974 and 1976. Silas also played for the Phoenix Suns, Seattle SuperSonics, and Denver Nuggets before retiring in 1980, having amassed an impressive 12,357 points and 12,357 rebounds.

Silas went on to have a successful career as a coach following his retirement as a player. He coached the San Diego Clippers, Charlotte Bobcats, and Cleveland Cavaliers, among others. He was also an assistant coach to the New York Knicks and the Phoenix Suns.
