After being drafted by the San Diego Rockets (now the Houston Rockets) in 1968, Adelman played for seven seasons in the NBA as a point guard for the Rockets, Portland Trailblazers, and Chicago Bulls. Adelman began his coaching career in the NBA as an assistant coach for the Portland Trailblazers in 1983. In 1988, he became the head coach of the newly-established Minnesota Timberwolves, and it is here that he began to make his mark as a coach.
