Rick Adelman is a former NBA player and coach known for his dynamic offense-oriented style. Born in California in 1946, Adelman attended Loyola Marymount University where he played basketball for four years. As a senior, Adelman helped his team win the WCC championship, and he finished his college career with an impressive average of 7.7 points and 2.8 assists. After being drafted by the San Diego Rockets (now the Houston Rockets) in 1968, Adelman played for seven seasons in the NBA as a point guard for the Rockets, Portland Trailblazers, and Chicago Bulls. Adelman began his coaching career in the NBA as an assistant coach for the Portland Trailblazers in 1983. In 1988, he became the head coach of the newly-established Minnesota Timberwolves, and it is here that he began to make his mark as a coach. Adelman's teams were known for their fast-paced offense and unconventional rotations, and he earned praise for his ability to craft teams around the talents of his players. Adelman's best years as a coach came with the Sacramento Kings in the early 2000s, where he led the team to the Western Conference Finals in 2002 and 2003. He then coached the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors before retiring in 2014.
